Reading Notes W4: Voltaire, Part A

voltaire or born name Francois-marie Arouet since a very young age he has always had a passion for literature and opposing organized religion. He committed himself to writing in France his writing was seen as a danger to religion and civil order. He was an Enlightenment thinker, he also did not see democracy as the best form of governmentBy the time of Voltairedeathhe was seen as national heroIn allhe had produced enough work to fill 135 volumesin range of genres including tragedyepicphilosophyhistoryfictionand journalism. A lot of Voltaire work combines lively appetite for humor with horrifying sense of the real existence of evil. This was probably do to his belief in Deism, which means that god docent intervene in the natural world. The story that I read was Candide, The story begins in Westphalia at the castle of the high and mighty Baron of Thunder-ten-tronckh. The main character Candide who is traveling and figuring out what thee is to life after getting kicked out of his home. His first night out on his own when he was starving and cold a man offered to buy him food  and explained to him "Men are made to help each other" (voltaire p. 356 -357). The story continues as travel and come across many people that teaches him lesson about life the good, the bad and everything in-between.
