Reading Notes W 5: Feng: Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger , Part A

The story "Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger” is a short story writing by the author Feng Menglong. The story takes place during the ming dynasty and is a romance story. the courtesan Du Mei fell in love with the young stylish master, Li Jia. commissioner Li found that his son has been spending his time there and disapproves of his sons actions. The madam of the house made a deal with them both if he brings her 300 taels, Du Mei is free to marry Li Jia. With the help of Li Jia’s friend, Liu Yuchun, they successfully get the money to pay off madam and became a real couple. Which leave the problem with his father not accepting someone of lower class into the family. While they figure out a way to deal with li Jia father they make a new friend  Sun Fu. Who helps them out a lot and offers to fix Li's problem with his father for Du Mei and 1000 taels of silver. So Li decides to take that offer and betrays Du Mei so she decides to sink herslef and the jewels to get away from Li and Sun and thats how it ends.

-  Li Jia: described as a young stylish master, whom was gentle, well educated, successful,     
   full of passion and came from a respectable elegant family
- Du Mei or Du tenth: is a prostitute at a "whore house"
- Liu Yuchun’s: is Li Jia friend and also a well educated scholar
- Sun Fu: he came from a salt trade family, which were super rich. He is also well-educated 
  and gentle.
- Commissioner Li: father of Li Jia and a leader of a prosperous region in the south china
- Tenths madam: She runs and owns the "whore house" that Du Mei works at
