Reading Notes W 6: Barbauld , Part B

Born Anna Laetitia Aikin (1743 -
1825) in rural Englandshe was the daughter of two PresbyteriansAs childshe persuaded her father to teach her Latin and Greek which was typically forbidden to women in this period of time. She was a fierce opponent of war and slavery and an early defender of animal rights. She was special because she was doing a lot things women didn’t use to do especially a time before women gained the same rights of men. One of her poems that was pretty popular “To a little invisible being who is expected soon to become visible”.  The poem is about a mother that is full of excitement and anticipation for her baby that is about to be born and speaks of the baby in nameless, genderless, and classless way (p. 328). In this poem she hints at there are more to women that they have there strengths as well as talk about hopefully a day comes when women are no longer stuck in traditional roles. Another poem she was known for was " Eighteen Hundred and Eleven". This poem talks about war more specifically Britain's participation in the Napoleonic Wars. She also express that britain is declining and America is on the rise.  Another writer named ANDRÉS BELLO,
Born in CaracasVenezuelain 1781Bello began working for the colonial government in 1802 and oversaw projects of national scope. Bellos type of poetry combines classical and romantic impulses. His most famous poetry was “ode to tropical agriculture” written in 1826. It talks about agriculture and the abundance of food and the land is represented as providing everything  people need to live. . Then the Spaniards arrive, and place that group of people into servitude, yet the land kept providing. He also hint at us as we are destroying the land with are advancements (p.391-394).

Week 5 Analysis

This week I will be doing a close reading of "Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger". The passage that stood out to me the most was when Du
Tenth said
, “
My lovecan you really not come up with even single coinWhat is to become of the plan for my future?” The young master just weptunable to answer single wordAround the fifth watchit gradually grew lightTenth said, “The padded quilt sleep on contains hundred fifty taels in odd changeThis is my private savingsMy loveyou may take itwill take care of half of the three hundredand you can take care of the other
half"
(p. 505). This talks about the plan that Du tenth and master Li had made to get Du tenth out of the whore house. So they made a deal with madam who was in charge of the the whore house to let Du tenth go free so she can marry master Li. The amount he needed to pay was 300 hundred silver taels within ten days or he will have to leave and never come back again. So three days have passed and Li hasn't accomplished anything so Du tenth helps by giving him what she save which was half of the amount that was asked for. In this Du tenth use the phrase my future which make me think that she is in it for herself and not with master Li. Also the tone she has through this passage and story shows she has a leadership role when it comes to her and master Li. This also shows that master Li is kind of a weak person who is easily influenced by what others say. My first thought were they are both trying to do this together but the more I thought about it it seemed more one sided in who is putting in more effort. Based on they are acting now foreshadow how they would respond to later events in the story. This is a rising issue that later builds up to the climax of the story. The raise an issue that all women during older asian culture were just there to look pretty and be a stay at home women, while men are suppose to be smart and manly. This story was the very opposite when it came to this culture norms. My new these is no matter your gender or background you are going to be you

Week 4 Analysis

This week I will be writing a literary analysis on Wu Cheng'enis folk novel journey to the west. I believe the theme of this story is redemption for your sins and also the spread of buddhism to the west. What this means to me is no matter what you have done sometimes you can get a second chance, especially for things like mistakes which are things you didn't want to do on purpose. This plays out pretty welling the story because the disciples that committed these sins weren't truly bad creatures, they helped the monk a lot through there journey as they faced monsters, demons, and just plain bad people. I think the metaphor works well for what the author is trying to discuss in his story, that there is no straight path to enlightenment there are going to be obstacles and you are going to make mistake but it is never to late. The historical part that china was being influenced by buddhism during this time in history and there ideals. As well as new styles of literature which has shaped the journey to the west, due to china's interaction with the rest of the world. The elements I choose influence and informs the author's point of view as he was writing this folk tell which was one part religious and another part fantasy because of the new mystery of the west china has not come into contact with as much, which left there mind open to imagination. The literary elements that I liked the most was character because it gave pretty good description of the charters appearances as well as there character background and a little bit of there mindset. This also can go hand and hand with imagery since this is a folk story that involves a lot of fantasy creatures and places.

Reading Notes W4: Early Modern Chinese vernacular literature, Part B

Through out the changes of Chinese culture and structure of political, Chinese literature did not not have a classical tradition of dramatic literature. This was due to many influences of nearby by people as well as farther away as well as the progress of time and change of dynasties. Another thing that helped form this early literature was religion such as confucianism, which made a conflict between ruling elite and its potential as a vision for a god life and just society. "The intellectuals of the first half of the twentieth centurywho called for literary revolution that would abolish classical Chinese and the privileges that were associated with it,...ispoke the language of the peopleit decried hypocrisyviolenceand corruption through money and powerand it celebrated passiontruthloveand heroic loyalty to oneself and oneprinciples (p. 420)". Wu Cheng'enis a novelist and a poet known for his most popular folk tell called journey to the west. It about a monk named Xuanzang who  is traveling west from china towards India in search of buddhist scriptures who returned. later version came to give him three protectors by the great buddha, which they are there to atone for there sins. The three disciples are Sun Wukong (monkey)Zhu Bajie (pigsy) and Sha Wujing (sandy). "Throughout their journeythe four travelers are watched overand sometimes interact withnumber of otherworldly beingsan assortment of benign bodhisattvas (buddhas who linger in this world to help othersand Daoist pantheon of unruly and sometimes dangerous deities"(p. 422). This story became popular because it was about people and fantastic creatures, magic monkeys, monks and other worldly things.

Reading Notes W4: Voltaire, Part A

voltaire or born name Francois-marie Arouet since a very young age he has always had a passion for literature and opposing organized religion. He committed himself to writing in France his writing was seen as a danger to religion and civil order. He was an Enlightenment thinker, he also did not see democracy as the best form of governmentBy the time of Voltairedeathhe was seen as national heroIn allhe had produced enough work to fill 135 volumesin range of genres including tragedyepicphilosophyhistoryfictionand journalism. A lot of Voltaire work combines lively appetite for humor with horrifying sense of the real existence of evil. This was probably do to his belief in Deism, which means that god docent intervene in the natural world. The story that I read was Candide, The story begins in Westphalia at the castle of the high and mighty Baron of Thunder-ten-tronckh. The main character Candide who is traveling and figuring out what thee is to life after getting kicked out of his home. His first night out on his own when he was starving and cold a man offered to buy him food  and explained to him "Men are made to help each other" (voltaire p. 356 -357). The story continues as travel and come across many people that teaches him lesson about life the good, the bad and everything in-between.

Topic Research

The topic I will do more brainstorming and research on for my class project is. What does this work reflect about its historical, social, political and/or economic context? You may focus on race, class, power, cultural values and beliefs, historical events, the author’s biography, gender, psychology, etc. My key elements would be introduction, evidence, and conclusion maybe some examples and some facts. I am choosing this topic for my project because it has a wide variety an big area I can discuss and do research on. I don't know exactly how I am going to go about creating my project. I usually write a bunch of ideas done on paper or type it out then I think what I kind of want to say for my key elements. Then I start finding evidence and research on what I am writing about. After that I start to mess around with the order of how my paper will flow, then finally I type it all out and do corrections at the end before I submit it. I think I might use some outside sources not many to help support and better understand the historical, social, political and or economic part of the text.

Feedback Strategies

I read How to craft constructive feedback article and it talked about two things that people who express there selfs want that is someone who is a witness and mirror. The three things that can help you do this is one observe, two describe, and three suggest. I believe this is the best way to go about giving feedback not like most people do were they only tell you what you have done wrong and don't help you improve in any way. I feel confident about going people feedback I just don't know if my feedback is very helpful. If I had strategy I could recommend this would be pretty close to it because I focus on how best to can help that person improve. When it comes to giving useful feedback I would like to improve on how I can give better feedback so the reader can improve with what I suggest.

Week 3 Analysis

"The Song of Chun-hyangis also the most widely performed and best-loved example of Koreaindigenous pansori narrative dramawrapping stunning indictment of the corruption of Koreaelites within compelling tale of romantic loveheroismand fidelity" (you chin-han p.74). W
hen it first appeared it was in the 18th century. This was usually performed on an open stage most likely outside, during the 20th century. p'ansori was influenced by social changes that took place during chosen dynasty, this was around the time when confucianism was being spread and adopted. Choson confucianism focused on males having power in society and favored over women. This story attacks the ruling elite and the class system of there society. (you chin-han p.75)
The story The Song of Ch'un-hyang is set in cholla province, which tells the story of Ch'un-hyang who is a daughter of a aristocrat father and kisaeng (female entertainer) mother. There is also Master Yi Mong-ryong who is the son of a magistrate. They are both betrothed to each other. While Master yi is gone to test for a civil servant, ch'un-hyang vowed faithfulness to him. The new magistrate wants to make her into his concubine but she goes against him and doesn't follow his orders. So see was punished by getting beat close to death. In the end Master Yi passes the exam and goes back for ch'un-hyang.
