Week 14 Project Planning

Choose one short story or novel excerpt. Write a piece in which you explore the following:
1. In what ways could this story be considered an artifact of history?
2. What does this story teach us about history?
3. How does a story teach us about a time or place differently than a history book?

The question is asking us to talk about the history in three different parts in the context of history. The first part is to show why this is important to history. The second part is what do these story or moments in history teach us about the past or what do we learn by looking back at are past. The third part is asking what do story teach that history books do not and is it similar, different or something new. The readings i will use is James Baldwin "Notes of a native son" because it seems interesting to talk about and it is talking about time in history were slavery / racism was very big  which has change now. The literary devices I might use are Imagery, Symbol(ism), Tone, and Point of View which I see a lot of examples that I could use. These device could help me answer the the project question because it will help give insight to the authors point of view as well as what he is trying to say. The exact example Im going to use i do not really know just yet I am still figuring out how I want to do this. I can come up with at least a working arguable thesis are something close to is which I might change when I figure out what info I will use exactly. my thesis idea is history has changed from a time of great racism to a period of a more undressing and equal society which is one of the most important period in American history.

  1. Hi there Timothy! Great job breaking down those questions. I think the fact that you broke down the questions into simpler language helped me to further understand and also having both the original and your version of the questions helped me to fully understand what the prompt was asking of you. I am excited for you to address racial injustice! I agree with you, it’s a very important subject, so I can’t wait to see what you’ve got to say. I hope you learn a lot more and can teach me something new. I also relate, I always have so much difficulty boiling down my thesis to a simple sentence, but I trust you to think of something! I agree, that is one of the most important times in history, so I can't wait to see what you have to say. Racial injustice is a really difficult subject to address, so if I could give any advice, it would be to be truly empathetic and understanding on this one. Great job! You can do this, Timothy!

  2. Hi Timothy, it looks like you have a great start to your final project. I think this short story is a great choice for this project prompt, as it provides a first person experience to a time in history that we learn about in school. The textbooks really only give dates, settings, and major events, whereas this shows us what it would be like to live in that time so I think you have a great start!

  3. Hi Timothy! Notes of A Native Son is a very powerful and moving work, made more so by the context of the time period it was written in, and given that the man who wrote it experienced racial discrimination himself. I'm using this work in my final project too, and I've seen a lot of people doing the same. I think something you could really focus on is the fact that a history book can't give you the insight that a person speaking about their own experiences can. It can't give you the complex emotional reaction, the confusion, the hurt, the anger, and the fear that Baldwin gives us when he describes the experiences he had first hand. This would be an easy way to incorporate the literary elements aspect into your essay, because Baldwin is very descriptive in his writing, and you could provide examples of his use of metaphors and such.
