Topic Brainstorm 3

1. From a piece of fiction (short story, section of novel, or a play) choose a female
character on whom to focus, and create a project that discusses some of the following questions:
  • What is the author’s attitude towards her? (how can you tell?)
  • What is your attitude towards her?
  • How do (at least 2) other characters view her?
  • How does she view herself?
I choose this topic because there is a lot of stories that we have read that focus on women roles in many different societies during many different time periods. What I would like to learn through this project is more about the author and how they refit themselves through there characters. The strengths I think I would bring to this topic is how much i will dig deep and think about a character from many point of views. What I have learned from the first project process that has helped me is critical thinking to help me with gathering info.

2.Choose one short story or novel excerpt. Write a piece in which you explore the following:
  1. In what ways could this story be considered an artifact of history?
  2. What does this story teach us about history?
  3. How does a story teach us about a time or place differently than a history book?
I choose this topic because one I have not done a brainstorm on this topic yet and second exploring the historical context of a story seemed interesting. What I would like to learn through this project is more about how much these stories reflect actual history and how has history influenced these stories. The strengths I think I would bring to this topic is how much i will do research outside of the text. What I have learned from the first project process that has helped me is information gathering.

3.Choose a reading selection. Then choose one of the following questions, and write an argument in response to it:
  • How does the work reflect the period in which it was written?
  • What does the work reveal about the cultural behavior contemporary to it?
  • How are class differences presented in the work? Are characters aware or unaware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives?
I choose this topic because one I have not done a brainstorm on this topic yet and second it gives me options within this this topic. What I would like to learn through this project is more about how much these stories reflect actual history, peoples behaviors, culture, economic and many other things during the stories time periods. The strengths I think I would bring to this topic is how much more I would like to know about the author and other outside influences that have affected the book. What I have learned from the first project process is a better way to take notes as well analyzing a stories from many point of views.

  1. Hello Timothy!
I think its interesting that you chose a few topics that you haven't done yet and I think that it's great that you are attempting to do so. The most important thing to do is to see which readings you can use for each topic so you would be able to get an idea of what you can do for your project. As for the first topic, I think that's a great idea because throughout our readings, we have come across so many intriguing female characters like Ch'un-Hyang or Kieu so you have to really choose the one that you can write about the most! Can't wait to see how your project will turn out!

  2. Hello Timothy, I think you picked a good set to possibly write your project about. For the first one most of the readings have a lead character who is a woman so there are a lot of options there if you choose to go with topic number one. Topic two would be an interesting one and I think would be a cool one to read. For the third topic I'm not sure if you have done a project on the two stories im going to mention but I can think of two that would work well. One being the story, "The Song of Ch'un Hyang". I think it might be a good story if you choose to go with the third topic because it represents class differences well. Another story would even be, "Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger" By:Melong Feng. Both stories show how important both social status and class meant in their cultures. Look forward to seeing what topic and stories you choose, have a good one.

  3. Hi Timothy, you chose some very good prompts for the third project. The first prompt I think is a great one since it focuses on the female character within the text and the various perspectives. I think there are several texts that you could use for that one, for example the The Tale of Kieu. The second topic is also a good one since there are various directions to choose from, and it will be interesting to view the story from a historical aspect. The third prompt is a great one for the same reasons and you could use The Song of ChunHyang or even the recent story of Native Son because it has a lot to discuss in terms of the era it was written. You could definitely cover the society in that era as well as the beliefs and values, and also the civil rights movement that had occurred. Whichever prompt you end up choosing I am sure you will do great, good luck on your project.

  4. Hey Timothy! You seem to have a well understanding of each topic you wrote about and a great interest in all of them. The first topic you wrote about, the female character one, you are right about all the different roles we have read about female's character and how they each vary. It makes you think deeper about the true meaning of a woman's character. It is interesting and I hope you are able to decide on what topic you are going to write about. The historical context seems interesting too and that's a topic you would have to provide great evidence for. You could definitely cover the key points of that topic and use good quotes. I wish you the best of luck on writing a great project submission for the last submission. Good luck again and I look forward to reading your work Timothy!
